Lowe wants more from Glory

Perth winger Youssouf Hersi is out for the season.

Perth Glory coach Kenny Lowe is looking for improvements from his side, and wants to bring in a new player this month.

The Glory moved seven points clear at the top of the A-League table with their 2-1 win away to Melbourne Victory.

Beating their nearest rivals in the table is a result Lowe says will guarantee they are taken seriously as title challengers.

But Lowe won’t allow Perth to rest on their laurels ahead of the Asian Cup break, and is challenging his team to keep pushing themselves.

“We are where we are because we’ve earned it,” said Lowe. “What we need to do now is improve and stay where we are. We need to improve and get better.”

Perth are without winger Youssouf Hersi for the rest of the season after he suffered a serious hamstring tear, so they will try to make a signing during the transfer window.

Lowe said: “We’re trying to bring somebody in … we’ve only got one replacement (place) for Youssouf, that’s all we’ve got. It’ll be like for like, if we can.”

The Glory are 2.20 to win their next game against Adelaide United, a draw is 3.40 and United can be backed at 3.20.

Both Sydney clubs are set to add to their squad during the transfer window.

Western Sydney Wanderers coach Tony Popovic said his club were “always looking; we’re open to all possibilities in January.”

Daniel Mullen and Kwabena Appiah are reported to be heading to Newcastle Jets from Wanderers to make space in their squad, while Popovic is also willing to let Vitor Saba and Seyi Adeleke leave.

Sydney FC are hoping to sign former Brisbane Roar defender Luke DeVere, who has returned to Australia after a stint in South Korea.

Coach Graham Arnold said the Sky Blues were lining up a defensive midfielder as an injury replacement player.

Brisbane are set to sign former Western Sydney defender Jerome Polenz, who has been training with Frans Thijssen’s side.
