Loughborough defeat Yorkshire in first Kia Super League match
• Loughborough 128-9, Yorkshire 85; Loughborough win by 43 runs• Crowd of almost 1,000 attends start of new women’s T20 competition
A new era for women’s cricket dawned on Saturday with a 43-run victory for Loughborough Lightning over Yorkshire Diamonds.
The first match of the Kia Super League, the new women’s Twenty20 franchise competition, attracted a crowd of almost 1,000 – the highest attendance at a women’s domestic cricket match in England for more than 60 years. Though none of the matches are being televised – the England and Wales Cricket Board wants to prove the quality of the cricket on show before it goes on TV – the spectators in Leeds would have found little to complain about.
