Lees calm on England future

England Test opener in waiting Alex Lees insists he is not focusing on his full international prospects just yet.

Yorkshire batsman Lees has been touted as the man to partner Alastair Cook at the top of order and will battle county colleague Adam Lyth and Middlesex’s Sam Robson, the current incumbent, for a place on the tour of the Caribbean next spring.

However, the current Cricket Writer’s Club young player of the year said: “I don’t think about England and what is in the future.

“There are players that are ahead of me and they probably deserve that opportunity. All I can do is focus on performing and scoring big runs. If I do that then we’ll see what happens.

“Touring with the Lions last year set me up for a strong season and I will use that experience again to go into 2015 in good form. I want to be firing come April and May with Yorkshire and ensuring that continues right through the summer.

“Ultimately my main objective is getting runs for Yorkshire in all formats. That is my job and I relish the pressures of aiming to be the best that I can be and contributing to the team.”

Lees and Lyth are among those heading to Sri Lanka for a spin camp pre-Christmas before a Lions party tours South Africa in the new year.

There are seven Yorkshire players involved in that trip with former Durham fast bowler Liam Plunkett now close to full fitness.

Yorkshire are 4.00 to retain their Division One title next season.
