Lawes to miss Wales showdown

Courtney Lawes is set to miss the start of England’s Six Nations campaign because of the ankle injury he picked up last month.

The lock will miss “the first few weeks” of the tournament, according to Northampton’s director of rugby Jim Mallinder.

Lawes sustained the problem during the Saints’ Aviva Premiership clash against Leicester just before Christmas and will definitely miss England’s opening Six Nations clash with Wales in Cardiff on 6th February.

It’s a blow for us because we haven’t got him for next week, and it’s a blow for England because he’s a key player.

Mallinder confirmed: “Courtney, unfortunately, has not recovered from his ankle injury.

“He has got a little bit of bone that he just needs clearing out, so he is going to miss the first few weeks of the Six Nations.

“It is just a little bit of bone that chipped off in the Leicester game. He would be expected to get back while the Six Nations is still going on.

“It is a blow for us because we haven’t got him for next week, and it is a blow for him and England because he is a key player.”

Stuart Lancaster will name his England squad for the Six Nations on Wednesday.

England are 2.62 to win the Six Nations outright, while Northampton can be backed at 2.75 to win the Aviva Premiership Grand Final.
