Lambert confident on Villa survival

Aston Villa boss Paul Lambert believes his side are on the right track.

Paul Lambert is convinced that if Aston Villa continue to play the way they are, they will not become involved in another relegation battle.

The Birmingham-based outfit are five points above the Premier League drop zone ahead of Sunday’s encounter against Sunderland, but are the lowest scorers in the division, with just 11 goals from 18 games played. They are 2.30 to beat Sunderland at Villa Park, with the Black Cats 3.50 and the draw 3.25.

They failed to net on Boxing Day, going down 1-0 to Swansea City in only their second defeat in eight matches, but Lambert believes his side deserved something from the game and that they are on the right track to climb the table.

Over the last two seasons, Villa have narrowly avoided the drop – by five points each time – but Lambert has no fear of a repeated struggle this time around. They are 7.00 to be relegated and 1.11 not to be relegated at the end of the season.

He said: “If we keep doing what we are doing and take the chances then we will win more games than not.

“There will be so many twists and turns throughout the season, but if we keep doing what we’ve been doing we will be fine.

“There are good players like Joe Cole still to come back and if we get everybody fit then we will certainly, the way we are playing, be a match for teams.”

Christian Benteke has scored twice in his last five games since returning from injury and suspension and is 2.50 to net against Sunderland.
