Krishna could return against Roar

Phoenix boss Ernie Merrick.

Roy Krishna could make a surprise return for Wellington Phoenix when they take on defending champions Brisbane Roar on Sunday.

The Fijian striker had scored five goals in six games before suffering a torn hamstring in the 1-0 home win against Western Sydney Wanderers on 27th December.

Coach Ernie Merrick was set to draw a line through his name for the club’s final two matches before the Asian Cup break, but skipper Andrew Durante said the striker still had a chance of being passed fit to take on Brisbane.

Wellington could use Krishna, especially as A-League top scorer Nathan Burns is unavailable as he is in camp with the Socceroos ahead of the Asian Cup.

Krishna’s injury was a minor, grade one tear and Durante said the outlook for the striker had brightened.

“I was in physio [yesterday] and Roy was there,” Durante said. “They’re going to check him out [today] and see how he is, obviously with hamstrings you don’t want to take too much of a risk but he is a chance to play.”

Wellington are 2.05 to beat the Roar, Brisbane are available at 3.50 and a draw is 3.40.

The Phoenix maintained their good form in their last game, without Krishna and Burns, as they won 3-1 away at Adelaide United.

Going into their away game against Sydney FC on 21st December, Merrick’s side were fifth in the table. They beat the Sky Blues 2-0 to overtake them in the table, and their win against United pushed them up to third.

Now they have the chance to go second in the table if they take a point from Brisbane, following Melbourne Victory’s setback at home to leaders Perth Glory on Friday.

It will be Jeremy Brockie’s last game for Wellington before he heads off to take up a contract with SuperSport United in South Africa.

Durante said of the 27-year-old striker: “Brocks has been a fantastic servant for the club. Sixteen goals in that first season [2012-13], he was a real standout.”
