Kaymer collapse lets in Stal

Frenchman Gregory Stal took advantage of a dramatic last-round collapse by Martin Kaymer to claim the title at the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship.

Stal, who secured his first-ever European Tour victory, came from eight shots off the lead to take the honours, eventually finishing 19-under par as he fired a superb 65 on the final day.

His efforts saw him secure victory by just one shot from Rory McIlroy, who started the day level with Stal, with the world number one also pushing for victory with a 6-under par 66.

Meanwhile, Kaymer, who had looked a certainty for a fourth triumph in Abu Dhabi after carrying a six-shot lead into the final round, saw his hopes go up in smoke as he shot a 3-over par 75 to end two shots back from Stal, paying the price for a triple bogey on the par 4 13th.

The German’s failure to see out the win was all the more incredible given that he led by ten shots at one point in his final round.

Fourth place was shared by another Frenchman Victor Dubuisson and Belgian Thomas Pieters, with the pair ending three shots adrift of the winner.

Kaymer, the reigning US Open champion, can be backed at 41.00 to win the Masters at Augusta in April, with McIlroy 5.50 and two-time Green Jacket winner Bubba Watson 17.00.
