Johnson battles to Hawaii win

Zach Johnson produced a superb round off 66 to beat off some stiff competition and win the Hyundai Tournament of Champions on Monday.

Having carded a disappointing round of 74 on Sunday to allow the likes of Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth go ahead on the leaderboard, the 2007 Masters champion secured a well-deserved score on the final day to take the title in Kapalua.

The success in Hawaii was (Zach) Johnson’s 11th USPGA Tour title and the 37-year-old was pleased by his form, as he finished one-shot ahead of Spieth going into the clubhouse.

He said: “Today was a grind but I felt at ease.

“I was comfortable. Yesterday, I didn’t score that well.

“Today I just tried to stay unemotional and remain athletic.

“I hit some quality shots that helped and some quality putts that helped even more.

“What I have learned when I am in contention, and I haven’t come through, it is because I am not doing what I was doing to get in contention. So the key is to just keep doing what you are doing.”

Johnson is 41.00 to win the Masters in April, with world number one Tiger Woods at 6.00 to take the first Major of 2014.
