Jets ready to make moves

January 18, 2015 12:45:34 UK

Phil Stubbins is hoping to solve the Jets’ poor defensive record.

Newcastle Jets are looking to make up to three signings before the transfer window closes, coach Phil Stubbins has revealed.

The Jets, who are 5.00 to finish in the top six, are making a priority of signing a left-back as they look to improve their poor defensive record that has seen them concede an A-League worst 28 goals in 14 games.

We’ve only got one recognised left-back at the moment so that’s a player we’ll be looking at.

Newcastle have their work cut out if they are to make the Finals Series this year, sitting eight points off the top six and having played a game more than sixth-placed Melbourne City.

Stubbins, though, says the playing group remain focused on improving in the second half of the season.

He argues it takes time for any club or national team to transition, adding: “We’re in a position where we’ve got a slight transition to get through and we’ll be looking at better passages ahead.”

The Jets have three spots available in their squad following the departures of midfielder Jonny Steele, defender Sam Gallaway and Argentine playmaker Marcos Flores in the past month.

Stubbins said he would look to fill all those gaps before the transfer window closes. He added: “We don’t have much time but there has already been some activity in the window from ourselves to look for players that can come in and fill a void.

“We’ve only got one recognised left-back at the moment so that’s a player we’ll be looking at. As for elsewhere on the pitch, we’ll be looking at team balance and whatever players can give the best opportunity to improve the squad, we’ll bring those players in.”

The Jets will be without promising midfielder Josh Barresi for the rest of the season after he tore his ACL in a pre-season friendly against Juventus, but the 19-year-old has made his first steps towards recovery as he has started running for the first time since his operation four months ago.

The Jets are 7.00 to win their next A-League game against Adelaide United, who are 1.44 to win themselves, with the draw 4.33.
