Jayhawks will be wary of the Rebels

Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks conclude their non-conference schedule on Sunday at the Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence against the Rebels of UNLV.

It’s a potentially tricky game for the No. 13 Jayhawks who are unlikely to overlook the Rebels following UNLV’s stunning upset of Arizona two days before Christmas. A fine rebounding performance by David Rice’s side keyed the win over the Wildcats and a repeat performance is probably needed if they are to surprise Kansas.

The Jayhawks, who are 26.00 to win the NCAAB Championship, eased back into action on Tuesday with a 78-62 triumph over Kent State. Shocked by the Temple Owls in their previous start, Kansas was paced by freshman Kelly Oubre Jr. who dropped in 20 points on 8-of-12 on the evening. The maturation of the youngster, who ironically played his senior high school ball in Henderson, NV, will be the key for the Jayhawks as they look to build on another strong non-conference schedule towards the NCAA Tournament.

Wednesday Kansas opens their Big 12 Conference play with a visit to the Lloyd Noble Center in Waco to take on the Baylor Bears. The Red Raiders of Texas Tech and Cowboys of Oklahoma State follow before three tough games against Iowa State, Oklahoma and Texas will help define whether the strong non-conference schedule was adequate preparation.

The Cyclones and Longhorns both appear to have very good sides this season and the annual Jayhawks’ procession to the Big 12 title will not be an easy one in 2015.

Meanwhile, the San Antonio Spurs are 5.00 to win the NBA Championship and the Los Angeles Clippers can be backed at 11.00.
