Jaliens re-signing a boost for Jets

March 14, 2014 12:03:10 UK

Defender Kew Jaliens will look to help Newcastle Jets keep up their recent defensive record after securing a contract extension with the A-League club.

The veteran Dutchman has inked a new one-year deal, having impressed the Jets with his performances at the back.

The focus now is to make the finals this season and from there we’ll take it one match at a time and see where that takes us.

Newcastle will look to earn a fourth clean sheet in five games when they travel to Gosford for the F3 derby against Central Coast Mariners on Saturday.

Apart from their 2-0 home defeat to Sydney FC in Round 20, the Jets have turned in solid displays at the back recently to boost their chances of making the finals series.

Wins away to leaders Brisbane Roar and second-placed Western Sydney have boosted the team’s confidence under interim coach Clayton Zane, and they won 1-0 at home last weekend against a Melbourne Heart side who had been on a four-game winning streak.

The clash between the traditional rivals has more riding on it than usual, as the Mariners occupy the last of the finals places while Newcastle are one place and one point behind them, in seventh.

Jaliens, 35, has contributed to six clean sheets in 18 appearances in his first season, while also scoring two goals.

Newcastle have the A-League’s third best defensive record with 27 goals conceded, behind only Brisbane and Western Sydney.

Jaliens said: “As a team we’ve had some ups and downs so far this season, but I think now everyone really knows what is expected of them and what they have to bring each week in order to get results.

“The focus now is to make the finals this season and from there we’ll take it one match at a time and see where that takes us.”

The Jets areĀ 3.00 to win at Central Coast on Saturday, with the MarinersĀ 2.37 to triumph on home turf.
