Ivanovic sent packing by qualifier

January 19, 2015 08:07:46 UK

Ana Ivanovic said she would “step back and work on a few things” after a shock 1-6 6-3 6-2 defeat by qualifier Lucie Hradecka at the 2015 Australian Open.

The number five seed won more matches than any of her WTA Tour rivals last year but her recent poor form at the Grand Slams came back to haunt her as she made an embarrassing early exit at Melbourne Park.

The Serbian had only ever faced Hradecka once before, at Wimbledon five years ago when she fought off two match points, but this time around had no answer to her Czech opponent.

“It’s really disappointing. It’s probably the worst thing that could happen,” Ivanovic said.

“But still, the year is young, and I really have to step back and work on a few things and maybe try to have a different approach to this kind of event, and try to see what was lacking here.”

Defeat for world number five Ivanovic was all the remarkable given that she won the first set in just 21 minutes. She also fell in the first week of the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open in 2014 and admitted her opening-round loss had blown her plans wide open.

Ivanovic added: “It’s very hard, because I planned and made a schedule according to this. But my plan for the moment is to play Dubai and then start with Monterrey, Indian Wells and then Miami.”

Hradecka’s win over Ivanovic was the third top-five win of her career – she took out Petra Kvitova and Sam Stosur, ranked number four and number five, in Madrid in 2012.

“I was so nervous in the beginning. My hand was shaky,” she told reporters.

“But I played one time against Ana before, at Wimbledon five years ago, and I had two match points, so my goal was if I had match point this time to finish it. And I’m so happy I did it this time.”

Ana Ivanovic is currently priced 23.00 in the 2015 French Open tournament winner outright betting.
