Ireland boost fast bowler options

January 07, 2015 17:03:46 UK

Ireland have taken a barrage of extra fast bowlers to the United Arab Emirates to help them prepare for next month’s World Cup.

William Porterfield’s men – who include a raft of county players such as Middlesex pair Paul Stirling and Tim Murtagh, Surrey captain Gary Wilson, Somerset slow left-armer George Dockrell and Peter Chase, who is farmed out by Cricket Ireland to Durham – are currently in the UAE for a triangular tournament also featuring fellow Afghanistan and Scotland.

“We’ve got five extra seamers with the World Cup squad here in Dubai,” said Ireland coach Phil Simmons.

It’s our intention to have some additional players based in Australia to provide cover for the World Cup squad, and we’ll finalise those arrangements in the coming weeks.

“Max Sorensen, Graeme McCarter, Eddie Richardson, Tyrone Kane and Barry McCarthy will all bowl in the nets and will provide a great resource in our build-up.

“It’s our intention to have some additional players based in Australia to provide cover for the World Cup squad, and we’ll finalise those arrangements in the coming weeks. It’s important that we’ll have players who can hit the ground running if we suffer any injuries during the two months of the event.”

Ireland play four one-day internationals in the UAE with their first one against Afghanistan on Saturday. Their two rivals go head to head in Dubai tomorrow.

West Indies provide the opposition for Ireland’s World Cup bow of 2015, on February 16 in Nelson, New Zealand.

However, the warm-up matches for the Irish – against the Scots and Bangladesh – are scheduled to take place in Sydney the previous week.

Australia are 3.50 to win the World Cup, South Africa are 5.00 and India are 6.00.
