TEAM NEWS

Liam Rosenior is a doubt for Hull's New Year's Day match against Everton with an Achilles problem.

James Chester is available after suspension but Mohamed Diame and Michael Dawson are still injured.

Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard will be sidelined for up to six weeks with a calf injury, so Joel Robles will deputise.

James McCarthy will be monitored after being withdrawn during the 3-2 loss against Newcastle as a precaution.

MATCH PREVIEW

Many of those who descend on the KC Stadium on New Year's Day will be nursing hangovers but a couple of hours in the fresh air should at least help the recovery process. It will take more than that to help the two men in the dugout, who might benefit from a few hours in a darkened room.

Both Steve Bruce and Roberto Martinez are suffering with major headaches at present and will no doubt be glad to see the back of 2014 after failing to build on last season's hard work

Hull City achieved their target of Premier League survival last term and reached the FA Cup final, which was an unforgettable occasion for all concerned despite the result.

As a consequence perhaps, expectations this time round were set too high. Regardless, they simply have to find a solution to their problems - and fast.

In the 2014 calendar year they managed just seven Premier League wins and, unlike last season, their home form is letting them down badly.

Home and away they have won one of their last 12 games, scoring just seven times, and their inability to convert a hatful of chances against Leicester highlighted their shortcomings in front of goal.

Lawro's prediction

"Everton's back-line used to be their rock but, at the moment, you look at them and think they have got a soft centre."

Predictions: Lawro v MOTD commentator Steve Wilson

As for Everton, keeping goals out appears to be the major problem.

After the defeat to Newcastle, even the manager acknowledged that they've been guilty of overplaying in the wrong areas and vowed to stamp out individual errors that have cost them dearly.

Injuries and suspensions haven't helped the Toffees' cause but, even when fit, their big-game players simply haven't delivered consistently.

In the wake of defeat on Tyneside, Martinez insisted he had no intention of ditching his philosophy of playing out from the back but unless he can come up with a plan B he could soon be looking over his shoulder - if he isn't doing so already.

Both sides will see the new year as a chance to make a fresh start - who will seize the opportunity?
