Hughes keen to make big impression

Derbyshire all-rounder Alex Hughes is looking forward to the selection challenge posed by the return of Wayne White to the club.

Hughes, 23, has risen through the ranks at Derby and impressed with his performances both in the top-flight of the County Championship in 2013 and then in Division Two last year.

But he only averages 21 with the bat and 42 with the ball in first-class cricket, so has spent the winter working on his all-round game.

Hopefully I will cement a first-team place, but I also want to be making watch-winning contributions.

“I have been working hard with Graeme Welch on my bowling trying to improve that, and with my batting trying to give myself the best chance this season,” Hughes said.

“Before Christmas we did a lot of running sessions to get us back to our peak fitness and now we are moving more towards netting and a lot more skill-based work.

“Hopefully I will cement a first-team place, but I also want to be making watch-winning contributions because that’s what I want to give to the team.”

Derbyshire snapped up White – initially on loan – from Lancashire despite him having a year left on his contract at Old Trafford, and there appears to be enough depth of talent for Wayne Madsen’s men to challenge for promotion again this summer.

They finished the 2014 campaign with five wins from the final six fixtures to finish fourth and are hoping to re-sign Indian batsman Cheteshwar Pujara as their overseas player.

Derbyshire are 7.50 to win the County Championship Division Two title this summer, with Lancashire available at 4.00 to be crowned champions.
