Horse Racing – Appleby confirms Commonwealth date

Trainer Charlie Appleby expects to send Blue Point straight to next month's Commonwealth Cup at Ascot following his winning reappearance at the track on Wednesday. The Shamardal colt stayed on strongly to win the Group 3 Merriebelle Stable Pavilion Stakes over six furlongs at the Berkshire track, confirming his trainer's belief that sprinting is his game as he did so. All roads now lead back to Ascot next month for the Commonwealth Cup over the same trip, a race Blue Point can be backed at 4/1 with bet365 to win. "I'm not going to start changing my opinion of him - he's the quickest horse in the yard and always has been," said Appleby. "The horse has wintered well. A couple of people have said he's not the biggest, but for me he's got a great chest on him and plenty of strength." Amongst his potential opposition for the Royal Ascot Group 1 are Aidan O'Brien's Caravaggio and the Pavilion Stakes runner-up, Harry Angel.
