Héctor Moreno’s stoppage-time header earns Mexico draw against Portugal

Anybody looking for answers to the thorny issue of Cristiano Ronaldo’s future will have found few clues here, but if Portugal needed reassurance of his dedication to the job in hand they can rest easily enough. Their captain’s apparent unhappiness at Real Madrid had dominated the buildup to the Confederations Cup opener against Mexico but he set up one goal and was involved in another as a match that had appeared to be drifting to a tepid conclusion ended pleasingly enough with the sides trading goals in the final five minutes.

Ronaldo had been a picture of studied inscrutability when he emerged, to a predictably shrill reception, for the warm-up although there must have been some element of release in jogging out of the tunnel. Tournaments turn footballers stir crazy at the best of times; that is amplified when you are the story and the focus had exasperated Fernando Santos, the Portugal manager, sufficiently to call a halt to questions on Ronaldo’s future during his pre-match press conference.
