Heart can rebound insists van ‘t Schip

Melbourne Heart can’t afford failure against Wellington Phoenix if they are to stay in the finals series race, admits coach John van ‘t Schip.

Heart’s remarkable resurgence under the Dutchman had seen them pick up four straight wins before they lost 1-0 at Newcastle Jets last weekend.

We know if we make mistakes, it’s almost done.

But the club had left themselves a mountain to climb this season, having been rooted to the bottom of the A-League table and not won until 17th January.

And with only four games left after they host the Phoenix on Sunday, every point is vital. Heart are six points off the top six, and will see their next two games – they have another home date with Central Coast next weekend – as must-win affairs.

The clash with Wellington at AAMI Park will come one month to the day since they thrashed Ernie Merrick’s side 5-0 at Westpac Stadium, so they have every reason to be confident.

Last week’s defeat to the Jets, the club’s first in eight games, won’t have any knock-on effects, according to van ‘t Schip.

“It was good run until last Saturday. Now we have to start over again in preparing,” he said. “We knew that the loss would come, we try to avoid it, but it’s good now to have that and the pressure’s a bit less.

“We know if we make mistakes, it’s almost done. If we keep on playing well and getting results we’re still in that.”

Heart have a clean bill of health going into the Round 23 clash, and will hope David Williams – joint-second in the A-League scoring charts – fires against the Phoenix as he did in February when he grabbed a hat-trick.

The Heart are 1.75 to win at home to the Phoenix on Sunday, with Wellington 4.50 to secure a victory on the road.
