Head knock keeps Strikers rolling

January 05, 2015 09:07:58 UK

Skipper Johan Botha hit the winning runs for the Adelaide Strikers.

An unbeaten half-century from Travis Head got Adelaide Strikers out of trouble to maintain their perfect Big Bash League record with a five-wicket win over Brisbane Heat.

The Strikers, who finished next to bottom last season, have won all four of their games including beating defending champions Perth Scorchers at the WACA.

Brisbane have seen their chances of making the semi-finals eroded by three defeats, and they did not put enough runs on the board at the Gabba.

The Heat could only muster 6-152, with just nine runs coming off their last two overs for the loss of two wickets.

They had Adelaide four down for 63 in the reply before Head steered the visitors home with 57 not out from 40 balls.

He put on 87 for the fifth wicket with Alex Ross, who contributed 36 off 24 before being caught behind off Cameron Gannon.

Head hit three sixes, the last of which off Daniel Christian settled any late nerves after they were left needing 19 from the final three overs.

Skipper Johan Botha finished off the job in the space of two balls after Ross was dismissed, scoring two runs to tie the scores then hitting a six over long-on off Gannon to see the Strikers home with seven balls remaining.

Head would have been relieved to play his match-winning innings, having dropped a sitter in the field to hand Nathan Reardon a lifeline on two and seeing him go on to score an unbeaten 31 off 30 balls.

Brisbane, put in by Botha, stuttered to nine without loss from their first three overs before Jimmy Peirson and Peter Forrest got going.

Both hit fours off Craig Simmons next over and stayed in the groove until Forrest was out lbw to Adam Zampa for 33 off 31 balls to end their opening stand of 60.

Reardon and Ben Cutting added 49 for the fifth wicket, before both he and James Hopes fell in the penultimate over to Ben Laughlin.

The Strikers are 1.66 to beat Perth Scorchers in their next match, with the Scorchers 2.20.
