Hayes admits Claudia Jean fears

January 07, 2015 11:57:42 UK

Champion trainer David Hayes is concerned Claudia Jean could get stuck on the fence in Saturday’s $2million Magic Millions 2YO Classic after landing gate one in the barrier draw.

In years gone by, the inside barrier would be an advantage, but many believe it could be a disadvantage this year as the fence has been considered a ‘no-go zone’ at the past few Coast meetings when the track has been wet.

The track is rated a heavy 8 on Tuesday, meaning Hayes is more concerned about getting stuck on the worst part of the track than the statistical hurdles Claudia Jean has to overcome.

I’m more concerned probably about being stuck on the inside of the track where the ground is bad.

Since the turn of the century 10 horses have tried the ‘second start’ approach and failed and seven of them were debut city winners just like Claudia Jean.

“You are going against history but she had a couple of good trials before she ran so she is probably (education wise) on her fifth run,” he said.

“She is very well educated and she has worked very well on the Sydney leg, so I’m not concerned about (going into the race at just her second start).

“I’m more concerned probably about being stuck on the inside of the track where the ground is bad.”

Claudio Jean is 7.00 to win the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, Wicked Intent is 5.50 and Frequendly is 6.50.
