Harriet Dart slips to Wimbledon exit after brave battle with Karolina Pliskova

• World No 171 loses 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-1 in first round
• Seventh seed scrapes through against British youngster

Harriet Dart produced one of the finest Wimbledon debuts by a British player in recent memory as she went toe-to-toe with the seventh-seed Karolina Pliskova before succumbing after an intense three-set battle that raged for over two hours.

On paper it looked like a mismatch: Pliskova, the big-serving former world No 1, against a 21-year-old who came into the match ranked a career-best 171. But Dart was fearless and nerveless, hitting more aces and winners than her illustrious opponent before running out of steam in the third set and losing 7-6 (2), 2-6, 6-1.
