Hansen issues Carter backing

New Zealand head coach Steve Hansen believes fly-half Dan Carter will get back to his best if he is given more time.

The All Blacks star struggled in his first start for his country against Scotland following his lengthy lay-off with a broken leg.

Carter looked out of sorts in the hard-fought 24-16 victory at Murrayfield last weekend and has now missed out on the matchday squad to face Wales at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday.

Hansen has admitted Carter was slightly below par against the Scots but believes game time in Super Rugby will see him soon get back to his best.

He said: “If he’d come through the other day probably a little bit better, he might have been on the bench, but it’s impossible to ask a guy to have as much time off as he’s had and not be rusty.

“It’s great with him getting game-time, we’ve got confidence that he’s right and he’s got confidence his body’s right, he just needs to go home now and play Super Rugby and lots of it.”

New Zealand are 1.90 to win the match with a 14.5-point handicap while a Wales victory against the All Blacks is available at 6.00.
