Nottinghamshire left-armer Harry Gurney is determined to impress in Sri Lanka and book his place in the England squad for the World Cup next year.

The 28-year-old has been included in the party for the seven-match one-day series in Sri Lanka and is desperate to add to the seven ODI appearance he has so far made for his country, with Gurney having taken ten wickets at an average of 27.40.

I’m very confident, I think I’ve got a lot to offer.

Ahead of the first warm-up game on Friday against a Sri Lanka A side, Gurney said: “From a personal perspective my aim here is to try and cement that spot and get on that plane to Australia.

“I’m very confident, I think I’ve got a lot to offer. I’m the only left-armer involved in this squad.

“Going into those games, hopefully I can offer something a little bit different and when the selectors sit down to pick that squad hopefully I get my place.”

Another man desperate to show what he can do is all-rounder Ravi Bopara, who was omitted from the squad for the series against India at the back-end of the English summer.

The Essex man added: “Obviously I was disappointed during the summer, but that’s life and I’ve got a great opportunity here.

“I don’t see it as putting pressure on myself and cementing my place. I see it as an opportunity and a good time to have fun.”

England, who have been drawn alongside Australia, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Scotland in Pool A at the World Cup, are 9.00 to lift the trophy, with the Baggy Greens 3.75 and India 5.50.
