Golf – Stricker turns to Love and Johnson

USA captain Steve Stricker has announced Davis Love III and Zach Johnson as two assistants for this year's Ryder Cup battle with Europe, who are 6/4 with bet365 to retain their crown. The eagerly-anticipated match will take place between September 25-27 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin and Love and Johnson will join the previously-confirmed Jim Furyk in aiming to help Stricker lead USA to a home victory. Love has twice skippered the States at Ryder Cups, losing the 2012 edition in Illinois in 2012 when Europe pulled off the so-called 'Miracle of Medinah' before getting his revenge with a 17-11 triumph at Hazeltine in 2016. Johnson was a vice-captain two years ago for the clash in Paris and also assisted Tiger Woods for the United State's Presidents Cup success in 2019. Stricker believes he has the right combination of vice-captains and as well as labelling Love and Johnson as "strong communicators", told reporters: "Jim and I have talked about this a lot in the last year and now we are happy to add two Ryder Cup veterans in Zach and Davis to the conversation with the goal of putting this team in a prime position to win."
