Golf – Lowry eager to contend

Shane Lowry is confident of mounting a third challenge in a row to win the US Open, having come close in each of the last two years. The Irishman finished in a tie for second place in 2016 and a tie for ninth place 12 months earlier, with Lowry feeling that he had genuine chances to win on both occasions. And the former WGC-Bridgestone Invitational winner is not daunted by the challenge of the Erin Hills course in Winconsin, which is guarded by fearsome long rough close to the fairways on many holes. He told Eir Sport: "I like this type of golf, I like hard courses. I don't know why, but any type of tough course is something I enjoy. I think that's why I like the US Open. "Last year, obviously, I had a good chance to win and Dustin (Johnson) played exceptionally well and I made too many mistakes. "The year before at Chambers Bay I had half a chance with nine or 10 holes to go, but couldn't catch up. So, I feel I can handle this type of golf." Lowry is 10/1 with bet365 to be top GB & Ireland finisher and 22/1 to be top European.
