Golf – Lowry aims to stay smart

2016 runner-up Shane Lowry is determined to play smart when he bids for glory in the US Open at Shinnecock Hills. Lowry appeared well set to win his first Major two years ago when he took a four-shot lead into the final round of the at Oakmont, only for the Irishman to shoot a 76 which left him three shots adrift of eventual winner Dustin Johnson. He is now eager to use the lessons learned from that near miss to try and help him mount a challenge this weekend, with Lowry without a tournament win since claiming the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational title just under three years ago. He told RTE Sport: "I like the US Open. I like the test of it. I like how hard it is going to be. If I'm clever about my golf this week, I think I can do well. "That's the main thing this week, although your game needs to be good, if you are mentally prepared, you can do well." Lowry can be backed at 14/1 with bet365 to be top GB & Ireland finisher at Shinnecock Hills, while he is 30/1 to be top European.
