Gerrard confirms Galaxy switch

January 07, 2015 17:41:46 UK

Steven Gerrard has confirmed he will join Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer.

Steven Gerrard has confirmed that he will join Los Angeles Galaxy this summer, but vowed to give his all to Liverpool in the meantime.

The 34-year-old Reds skipper confirmed on Friday that he would leave Anfield at the end of the season when his current deal expires, and the former England international was immediately tipped to move to the MLS.

Gerrard has now revealed that he is “very excited” at the prospect of joining Galaxy in July and stressed that it was the ideal move because he didn’t want to move to a European club and run the risk of having to face boyhood club Liverpool in some competition.

I will continue to give everything for Liverpool for the remainder of this season before joining up with the Galaxy.

Gerrard is now relishing the prospect of helping Galaxy to secure more silverware in the United States, but he also intends to leave Merseyside on a high note this summer.

He told the LA Galaxy website: “The Galaxy are the most successful club in Major League Soccer history and I am looking forward to competing for more championships in the years to come.

“My discussions with (coach) Bruce Arena and (president) Chris Klein were extremely positive and the future of the team is very bright.

“I am committed to helping the LA Galaxy compete for trophies and to having an impact in Los Angeles and I will give my all for the club. In the meantime, I will continue to give everything for Liverpool for the remainder of this season before joining up with the Galaxy.”

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said: “We’re very pleased to acquire a player of Steven’s caliber, experience and character.

“He is one of the most decorated players in the world and will join our team with a wealth of success playing at the highest level of the sport.

“Steven will be an excellent example to our young players and we’re excited to add him and his leadership to an already talented roster.”

Gerrard is 7.50 to help Liverpool secure a top-four Premier League finish this season, while they are 9.00 to lift the FA Cup in May.
