Germany trip gives Reid confidence

January 17, 2015 11:37:19 UK

Collingwood’s Ben Reid is hopeful his visit to a sports treatment specialist in Germany has paved the way for him to overcome his long-standing injury issues.

The 25-year-old has returned from a trip to Munich to consult leading specialist Dr Hans-Wilhelm Muller-Wohlfahrt for advice on his run of soft-tissue injuries.

Reid was back in pre-season training with the Magpies, who are 31.00 to win the Grand Final, this week and is confident he will be able to train fully next month. The swingman had been on a carefully managed pre-season program after being restricted to injuries to just four games last year.

He said he sees it pretty regularly, the stuff I’ve had, which gave me a bit of confidence.

He suffered another setback at the start of the off-season when he hurt his calf, and the Magpies then decided to send him to see Dr Wohlfahrt, who has treated the likes of Usain Bolt and Kobe Bryant in the past.

Reid said: “Dr Wohlfahrt took an X-ray of my spine and he thinks a lot of the soft tissue injuries stem from my lower back. Which the guys here thought as well, but it was just to get another outlook from a guy who has dealt with it for a while.

“His techniques are probably a little bit different to what they do over here and it was something I will take on board which will help me out.”

The doctor, who has worked with Bayern Munich for 35 years, gave the 2010 premiership player reassurances about his condition.

“He said he sees it pretty regularly, the stuff I’ve had, which gave me a bit of confidence,” said Reid.

Collingwood, who are 7.00 to finish in the top four, are off to Queenstown shortly for a pre-season camp where Reid expects to take a limited part.
