George Ford inspires Leicester to go third with hard-fought win at Newcastle

Good news for Leicester and for the England head coach, Eddie Jones: the Tigers’ Red Rose quintet are in fine fettle before the autumn internationals. Having impressed in a victory that lifted Matt O’Connor’s men ominously up to third, Jonny May, George Ford, Ben Youngs, Ellis Genge and Dan Cole will travel to Portugal for a three-day training camp. They had every right to feel thoroughly pleased with themselves after signing off from club duty for the next month to head to warmer climes.

“I’m up at 10 to five in the morning to fly out from East Midlands Airport to meet up with the England boys,” Genge, the loosehead prop, said after his side’s fifth successive Premiership win. “It’s about playing well for Leicester and if you do that, you get rewarded by England.”
