Formula 1 – Hulkenberg plays down Renault hopes

Renault are going in the right direction but remain a few years away from challenging for the Formula 1 titles, according to Nico Hulkenberg. The German driver looks set to follow up a 10th-place finish in his debut season with the French constructor in 2017 with a similar finish this term as he occupies ninth place with five races remaining. Renault are also well-placed to secure fourth place in the Constructors Championship behind the big-three teams of Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull. But they are striving to challenge the big boys in the future and pulled off a coup by securing the services of Daniel Ricciardo, who is 20/1 with bet365 to win the USA Grand Prix on 21st October, from the start of next season. And, while Hulkenberg is happy with the direction Renault are going, he feels that it will be some time before they are fighting it out for silverware. He said: "Our ambition is always to be at the front, fighting for podiums and victories in a few years, but we are still in the development phase. I think we have put in place the structure we can build on in the next few years."
