Flower: England reach end of an era

January 05, 2014 15:40:07 UK

Questions have been raised about Alastair Cook’s performance as captain.

Coach Andy Flower believes the England team has reached the “end of an era” following their 5-0 Ashes whitewash in Australia.

England capitulated during the fifth and final Test in Sydney, losing by 281 runs inside three days to end a miserable tour which has seen wave after wave of humiliation.

We certainly weren’t good enough, so there should be change of some description. But we should take a bit of time to review it properly.

England had arrived Down Under as favourites to secure the urn for a fourth time in succession following their 3-0 triumph over Australia in the summer. However, they underperformed badly, allowing their opponents to reclaim the Ashes with ease as all five Tests were won convincingly by the hosts.

This has led to questions concerning the futures of Flower and captain Alastair Cook, and the former concedes the need for a “full and logical” review. However, he says that now should be a time of reflection and that any decisions made should not be too hasty.

He said: “I, as leader, along with Alastair, have to examine the things we’ve done, the decisions we’ve made, the influences we’ve had – and they obviously haven’t been good enough.

“But I think a full and logical review at some stage in the near future might answer some of those questions.

“We certainly weren’t good enough, so there should be change of some description. But we should take a bit of time to review it properly.”

Flower has also called for “some sort of renewal for the England national cricket team” and this could start in the forthcoming ODI series against the Aussies. The first match takes place on Sunday 12th January and England areĀ 2.50 to win. Australia areĀ 1.53.
