Fifth Test win of 2014 for Black Caps

December 29, 2014 11:44:56 UK

New Zealand set a new record for Test victories in a calendar year as they beat Sri Lanka by eight wickets in the first Test in Christchurch.

Their win was their fifth of 2014, as they finished the match inside four days thanks to pace bowlers Trent Boult and Tim Southee.

The pair took eight wickets between them in Sri Lanka’s second innings and combined for 13 in the match.

New Zealand’s efforts in the first innings had paved the way for victory as they posted 441, with captain Brendon McCullum falling just short of a double century, then skittled the tourists for 138.

Enforcing the follow-on, they picked up the final five wickets of Sri Lanka’s second innings on day four to leave themselves a target of just 105 for victory.

Despite losing two wickets early on, there was little pressure on the Black Caps, who areĀ 9.00 to win the 2015 Cricket World Cup, in their chase at Hagley Oval.

Kane Williamson helped see his side through to their target in the final session of the day, completing a successful year with the bat, as he finished 2014 with 929 Test runs from his nine matches at an average of 61.73.

McCullum, who fell five runs short of what would have been the fastest double century in Tests, led the way for the Black Caps with 1,164 runs during the calendar year.

The New Zealand captain had put on 153 for the fifth wicket in the first innings with Jimmy Neesham, who went on to make 85. He also shared a 126-run stand with Williamson, and finished with 11 sixes and 18 fours in his 134-ball innings.

Boult struck with the fourth ball of the reply, having Dimuth Karunaratne out lbw without scoring, and picked up two more wickets in his first four overs of the first innings.

Karunarate scored 152 in Sri Lanka’s second innings and Angelo Mathews 66, while Boult and Southee picked up four wickets each.

The Black Caps, who areĀ 11.00 to win the 2016 Twenty20 World Cup, finished things off with a 64-run partnership between Williamson and Ross Taylor.
