Roger Federer’s bid for a second French Open title got off to a winning start as he saw off Lukas Lacko 6-2 6-4 6-2 in the first round on the Paris clay.

A break of serve in the fifth game set the tone for the rest of the match, as Federer eased into round two at the expense of the Slovakian.

And afterwards, the Swiss maestro, who took the title in France in 2009 and lost in the final in 2006-08 and 2011 expressed his view that eight-time champion Rafael Nadal should still be seen as the man to beat.

He told the media: “It doesn’t go week by week.

“I don’t know who’s talking all the time, but Rafa is the favourite and then Novak (Djokovic) and then the rest – you know. It’s very clear.”

Federer can be backed atĀ 17.00 to win the French Open this year, with NadalĀ 2.50 and Djokovic 2.37.

Meanwhile, in the women’s draw there was a comfortable opening victory for reigning champion and number one seed Serena Williams.

Williams proved far too strong for home player Alize Lim, winning 6-2 6-1 in just 78 minutes. Sister Venus also came through, beating Belinda Bencic 6-4 6-1, with the Williams siblings set to meet if both make it through to round three.
