Roger Federer admitted he was relieved to get his Australian Open campaign off to a winning start by beating Yen-Hsun Lu in straight sets.

The 33-year-old Swiss star, who has won the Australian Open title on four occasions, eased to a 6-4 6-2 7-5 first-round victory to set up a second-round clash with Simone Bolelli.

Federer, who is the number two seed this year, won the Melbourne crown in 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2010, and is in fine form having won the Brisbane International tournament earlier this month.

Winning the first round, it’s always a bit of a relief. I thought I played good.

He said after his triumph: “Winning the first round, it’s always a bit of a relief. I thought I played good. I thought I was playing very well through the first couple of sets.

“I was holding my service games very comfortably. At 5-2 in the second set, it was the first time he had any play on my service game. I was very happy.”

Meanwhile, the number three seed Rafael Nadal saw off Russia’s Mikhail Youzhny 6-3 6-2 6-2 in the Spaniard’s first match at a Grand Slam since Wimbledon seven months ago following injury and illness.

Federer is 6.50 to win this year’s Australian Open outright, with world number one Novak Djokovic at 1.83 and defending champion Stan Wawrinka 13.00.
