Epaulette set to land main event

Interstate raider Epaulette looks poised to claim the feature event, the Gr.2 $50,000 Silks Restaurant Cup at Albion Park this weekend.

Epaulette crushed his rivals in the heats last week and, after also landing the ideal barrier draw, is now in prime position to land the main event.

It has not all been plain-sailing though as trainer Ian Gurney has called on the assistance of horseman Daryl ‘Birdy’ Crapper to prepare the regally bred gelding for the feature owing to a medical procedure with his eyes earlier this week.

“I got the call-up to head north to oversee the campaign of Epaulette with Ian forced to take it easy because of his surgery and the horse is in great order, when Luke and Belinda (McCarthy – previous trainers) sent him up for this series he was ready and Ian has just kept him ticking him along perfectly,” Crapper said.

On Saturday night, Epaulette will start from gate two following the early scratching of The Pacman and looks the leader and horse to beat following his all the way heat victory in fast time last week.

Epaulette rated 1:55.0 for the 2138m which was three seconds faster than the other heat winner in Luksam.

Leading Brisbane reinsman Shane Graham, who partnered both heat winners, has stuck with Epaulette while Adam Sanderson has been engaged to drive Luksam.

“He went like a monster last week and his time backs that up and he pulled up in great order and Ian said he come home and put the head in the feed bin straight away,” he said. “His work this week has been strong so he’s ready to go for the final.”
