England Women 0-1 Canada Women: Lionesses beaten in World Cup warm-up

Christine Sinclair scores for Canada

England suffered their first defeat of 2019 as they were beaten by Canada in their first warm-up match for this summer's World Cup.

In front of a partisan crowd at Manchester City's Academy Stadium, the Lionesses recovered from a sloppy first half to control the game after the break.

But despite close efforts for Toni Duggan and Nikita Parris, they went behind with nine minutes left when Canadian stalwart Christine Sinclair pounced in the area after Nichelle Prince's shot came off the bar.

England ran out of time to find an equaliser and will look to bounce back from this disappointment when they face Spain in another friendly on Tuesday.

Games against Denmark and New Zealand follow in May and June, before the as yet unnamed 23-strong squad fly out to France for the World Cup, where they will hope to improve on their third-placed finish from 2015.

Canada get their revenge

The last time these two sides met there were jubilant celebrations for the Lionesses as goals from Jodie Taylor and Lucy Bronze sent England through to the World Cup semi-finals on Canadian soil.

This time it was the visitors who walked away with the win and England boss Phil Neville was left to consider a mixed performance.

England's intent to play it out from the back was clear, but they gave away several loose balls in the first half which Canada failed to put away - their only shot from Sinclair was saved by Karen Bardsley.

Manchester City forward Parris looked a constant menace and she helped spark life into the England team, who looked electric at times.

However, they failed to convert in front of goal. Duggan dragged her shot wide from close range, while Bronze put her lashed effort well over the bar and goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe saved well from Karen Carney.

Sinclair, who at 35 is hoping to go to her fifth World Cup, eventually popped up with her 180th international goal to spoil the party for the noisy home crowd.

More to follow.
