England hold off Australia fightback to win thrilling series opener

• First Test: Australia 28-39 England
• Late Nowell try seals victory

England have made a storming start to their three-Test series against Australia by beating the Wallabies 39-28 in a frantic first Test at Suncorp Stadium. The Six Nations champions recovered from 10-0 down to register a deserved victory which extended their unbeaten record under the head coach Eddie Jones to seven games.

It was a breathless game from start to finish and represented a tactical triumph for Jones in his personal duel with his former Randwick team-mate Michael Cheika. England did concede four tries but Jonathan Joseph and Marland Yarde registered tries either side of half-time and 24 points from the boot of Owen Farrell, who landed nine from 10 attempts, rewarded the hard work of England’s pack with James Haskell and Maro Itoje both outstanding.
