Elrich: Reds must show patience

Adelaide United have been urged to go into Saturday’s clash at Western Sydney Wanderers with a patient approach in front of goal.

The Reds fell two places to fifth in the A-League after losing 2-1 to leaders Brisbane Roar last round and coach Josep Gombau wants them to learn the lessons from that defeat.

We’re in a good position at the moment to creep closer to them and put a bid in for the top two.

Playing away in consecutive weeks to the top two sides is giving Gombau’s side a real test of their finals series credentials, and they will be facing a Wanderers side buoyed by their midweek Asian Champions League success.

Though the Roar are poised to secure the Premier’s Plate as the top side, the chance is still there for Adelaide to secure second place which would give them a bye in the first round of the finals and a home semi-final.

They are four points behind Western Sydney in what is a congested league table – only five points separate the Wanderers from seventh-placed Newcastle Jets.

Defender Tarek Elrich, who played 11 games for Western Sydney last season and joined United after being released, said it was important Adelaide got something out of the Pirtek Stadium clash.

Elrich said last week’s defeat to Brisbane was disappointing, but added: “We showed the fighting quality that we have and got a goal back – and we could have had another two or three if we’d been more patient in front of goal.

“That’s what our coach has been talking about all week. I think for us it’s about sticking together and fighting and continuing to play the good football we’ve been playing and continuing to get the good results we have been, bar last week.”

Elrich added: “It’s very important, this game. For us, it’s a final. We’re in a good position at the moment to creep closer to them and put a bid in for the top two.”

Adelaide are 3.30 to win at Western Sydney on Saturday, with the Wanderers 2.15 to secure a victory on home turf.
