Dylan Hartley cleared for England but Joe Marler is banned for three weeks

• Northampton attack ‘unjustified’ citing of hooker
• Nathan Hughes still waiting to hear result of his case

Dylan Hartley is free to captain England in their autumn internationals after being cleared by an independent panel but Northampton have attacked the decision to cite their hooker for the incident during Saturday’s European Champions Cup at Clermont Auvergne.

The 31-year-old was one of three England forwards cited for offences during the weekend’s matches, along with Joe Marler and Nathan Hughes. Marler was later banned for three weeks and will miss the first two Tests of the autumn international series leaving Eddie Jones with a headache as he prepared to announce his squad for the series on Thursday. Hughes is still waiting to see if he will face any sanction.
