Durrant has big plans for Real Love

Real Love could be heading east following her stunning all-the-way victory in the Group 2 Perth Cup (2400m) at Ascot.

All the talk in the build up to the race surrounded Real Love, and she did not disappoint when blowing away her rivals in impressive fashion.

Trainer Adam Durrant was delighted with the mare and believes bigger and better things could be on the horizon.

“She is showing exceptional things,” Durrant said. “There is no reason why she couldn’t be competitive in the right race over east.”

Real Love jumped quickly for jockey William Pike and shocked punters when she found herself in the unfamiliar role of pacesetter.

Kirov Boy, who led and won the A.T.A Handicap (2200m) by seven-and-three-quarter lengths last Wednesday week, applied the pressure to Real Love but could not go with her at the top of the straight.

Red Blast, given a gun ride by Jerry Noske, then issued his challenge from second position on cornering.

Real Love appeared vulnerable in the straight but dug deep like the good horse she is and found another gear to draw away and win by one-and-a-half lengths.

Kirov Boy did remarkably well to hang on to third.

“You can’t panic and it is what it is but it’s the last place I thought I would be,” Pike said.

“But you can get away with it when you have a good horse who is in form.

“I thought Kirov Boy was going to go past us but she kicked and was very strong.”

Meanwhile, Avenue of Glory can be backed at 2.60 in the fixed price win market ahead of Sunday’s Race 1 at Geelong, while Gun For Fun is available at 26.00.
