Duo sign new Mariners deals

January 21, 2015 10:00:28 UK

Phil Moss is delighted with the new deals for two key Mariners’ players.

Central Coast Mariners have handed new deals to former Premier League midfielder Nick Montgomery and winger Nick Fitzgerald.

Montgomery, who played more than 400 games over 12 seasons for Sheffield United before signing for the Mariners in 2012, has joined teammate Fitzgerald in inking a two-year contract extension.

The pair both earned championship medals with Central Coast in 2012-13, with Fitzgerald making it two titles in as many years having previously won with Brisbane Roar.

[They] are important pieces of the jigsaw for me and I think today is a fantastic day for the football club.

Fitzgerald, who is in his second spell with the club, has played in all 14 of the Mariners’ games this season, starting 10 times.

Central Coast are 26.00 to win the Grand Final.

He said: “I love the community feel here at the Mariners – it just feels like a family. It never crossed my mind to go anywhere else – I think I am at the right club to take my football forward.”

Montgomery said he had had a few offers to return to the UK, but wanted to stay in Australia for family reasons.

“My wife and two young kids are really settled here on the Coast and I really enjoy playing for the Mariners. I am looking forward to the next two years and beyond that we’ll see what happens,” he said.

Fitzgerald praised coach Phil Moss and his assistant Wayne O’Sullivan for having helped take his game to the next level, and feels they will be able to push him further over the next couple of seasons.

Moss feels there is real belief in the direction the club is taking, and said of the re-signed pair: “[They] are important pieces of the jigsaw for me and I think today is a fantastic day for the football club.”

He said he had set Fitzgerald a challenge to score goals on a regular basis – he has only found the net three times so far for the Mariners, who are 3.25 to finish in the top six.
