Dragons boosted by battle for places

December 30, 2014 11:39:18 UK

Ben Creagh is positive about the changes taking place at St George Illawarra.

Captain Ben Creagh is convinced the major changes to the St George Illawarra squad ahead of next season will have a positive effect on the club.

The Dragons’ team for 2015 is far from certain at this stage, with only four spots looking to have been locked down.

The pack, in particular, will have a new look next season after a number of departures and the recruitment of some beefy forwards.

Creagh will play in the front row, with almost every other forwards spot up for grabs.

It’s exciting the talent we’ve got there, the young guys who are just champing at the bit to play first grade.

The only other certainties are that New Zealand international Jason Nightingale will start on the right wing and Gareth Widdop and Benji Marshall will be the Dragons playmakers.

St George Illawarra are 41.00 to win the NRL grand final.

“It’s exciting the talent we’ve got there, the young guys who are just champing at the bit to play first grade,” said Creagh.

“The Dragons left wing spot’s open now which it hasn’t been for a long time and there’s guys at training fighting for that spot every day and that healthy competition is great for the team.”

The skipper said the make-up of the forwards had changed for next season, with a change in the previous policy of preferring leaner front rowers.

“As the game’s evolved over the past 18 months it’s the bigger forwards, the 110-120 kilo front rowers that are really making an impact and changing how the game’s played so the club’s realised that and bought in that way,” he added.

One of the new arrivals Creagh tips to do well is George Rose, who brings with him premiership-winning experience.

The skipper said: “He’s been going great… he’s played over 100 first grade games, he adds a bit more experience to the pack which we were lacking last year at times and he’ll be great for some of the younger guys to set an example.”

The Dragons are 3.50 to finish in the top eight in 2015.
