Diamond doubts Saracens hopes

January 18, 2015 11:19:48 UK

Sale Sharks director of rugby Steve Diamond believes that Saracens face a massive task next week when they head to Clermont-Auvergne in the European Champions Cup.

Sarries will head to France boosted by a 33-10 victory over Munster at Allianz Park, setting up a showdown with Clermont which will decide who finishes top of Pool 1.

For Saracens to go to Clermont and win would be a huge achievement for an English team. I would say the odds are stacked against them.

However, Diamond believes that the Aviva Premiership outfit will have their work cut out, having seen his side beaten 22-13 by the French side on Saturday.

He said after that loss on home turf: “For Saracens to go to Clermont and win would be a huge achievement for an English team. I would say the odds are stacked against them.”

Meanwhile, Saracens supremo Mark McCall says his side needed the boost of a heavy victory over Munster, having been beaten at Gloucester on their last outing.

He added: “We needed a performance like that. That will give us a great belief and, despite the frustration that we didn’t get that fourth try, it was a really good performance against a very good team.”

Saracens can be backed at 10.00 to win the European Champions Cup this season, with Clermont 4.33 and holders Toulon 2.87.
