Departing Adams tips City to go up

January 05, 2015 14:25:18 UK

Neil Adams has resigned as manager of Norwich City, but has backed the club to gain promotion back to the Premier League this season.

Former Canaries midfielder Adams opted to walk away following a 2-0 FA Cup third round loss at Preston North End, with first-team coach Mike Phelan placed in charge until a new manager is appointed.

I firmly believe that we are still on course for a crack at promotion back to the Premier League.

However, Adams is confident that he leaves Carrow Road with a squad in place who can challenge for a return to the top-flight, with City currently in seventh place in the Championship – three points outside the play-off places.

He told the club’s official website: “I firmly believe that we are still on course for a crack at promotion back to the Premier League. That is where this club belongs.

“However, I feel it is in the best interests of the team that an immediate change is made in order to ensure a positive impact on results.”

Norwich are available at 4.33 to be promoted this season, with Ipswich Town 2.50 and Derby County 1.72.

And midfielder Bradley Johnson, who captained City at Preston, has warned that they face a massive test next time out, when they travel to Championship leaders Bournemouth on Saturday.

He told the club’s official website: “It doesn’t get any easier as we’ve got to go to Bournemouth next, but the only thing we can do is put in a performance because we’ve let everyone down.

“We can only concentrate on that now and getting back to winning ways in the league.”
