De Bruyn ready to make his mark

January 15, 2015 16:13:54 UK

Theunis de Bruyn believes the way he acquitted himself against England Lions shows he can perform at the next level.

South Africa A batsman De Bruyn, an Unlimited Titans team-mate of both AB de Villiers and Faf du Plessis, struck an unbeaten 202 in the drawn match in Paarl this week.

The 22-year-old is viewed as one of the next generation for the Proteas and has also made the 50-over squad that takes on the Lions in a five-match series beginning on 25th January.

When I made my debut Morne Morkel was playing and ever since then he has been someone continually looking at my career.

“Obviously I am very happy with my performance, you put in a lot of hard work over the years and it’s great to start off in your first game like that,” he said. “It’s nice to get the ball rolling at this level.”

The former South Africa Under-19 player might be a top-order batsman but he has an unusual mentor – current Test fast bowler Morne Morkel.

“When I made my debut Morne Morkel was playing and ever since then he has been someone continually looking at my career – he’s kept on motivating me,” De Bruyn revealed.

The second unofficial four-day Test between the countries’ second strings begins on Sunday in Bloemfontein. Then attention turns to the limited-overs campaign for which the South Africans have drafted in De Bruyn’s Titans colleague David Wiese as Ryan McLaren is troubled by a hamstring problem.

Meanwhile, South Africa are 5.00 to win the upcoming World Cup, with Pakistan 11.00 and Sri Lanka 10.00.
