Dalgleish targets ten-game season

January 02, 2015 08:53:27 UK

Essendon’s Lauchlan Dalgleish has set himself a double-figure target for appearances next season, as he bids to rebound from an injury-hit year.

The 21-year-old sat out the whole of the 2014 campaign with Achilles and calf injuries, but has been able to take part in most of the Bombers’ pre-season.

If I prove myself to be fit and ready to go, then I think I have a position in the senior team.

Running defender Dalgleish played his first three games for the club at the end of 2013, making his debut as a half-back against North Melbourne in round 21.

He impressed in that game with 13 possessions, and after being promoted to the senior list looked on course to have a big year this year until his bad luck with injuries.

Dalgleish said it was a good sign that he had been able to get through most of the pre-season so far, saying: “Hopefully I can get through a full pre-season and hopefully I can get a consistent game. I would like to build towards getting ten or more games in the seniors.”

Taken with pick 11 in the 2012 Rookie Draft by Essendon, who are 26.00 to win the Premiership, Dalgleish said he felt more confidence going into this season.

He added: “I know I can do it now that I have played a few games, so hopefully I can build that into 2015 and a few more years after that.”

Dalgleish will add to the Bombers’ options in the half-back line, where he will hope to win game time competing against the likes of Courtenay Dempsey, Michael Hibberd and Martin Gleeson.

“If I prove myself to be fit and ready to go, then I think I have a position in the senior team,” he added. “There might be a few other boys across half-back that I might have to nudge out first, but I will see how I go.”

Essendon finished seventh last year, with 12 wins, exiting the finals at the first attempt when they lost to North Melbourne. The Bombers are 2.25 to finish in the top eight in 2015.
