Cumani on search for soft ground

Veteran trainer Luca Cumani is ready to send his Silk Sari to Haydock at the weekend in the search for soft ground.

Cumani is sure he will get the underfoot conditions his filly needs, claiming that, given the state of the track at the close of racing last weekend, he doesn’t expect much improvement.

Silk Sari won her last race on the soft and was third before that so her involvement in the Pinnacle Stakes looks pretty well assured.

Explaining that she is taking a step up from handicaps, the trainer believes the underfoot conditions give her a great chance against the likes of John Gosden’s Sultanina.

Cumani thinks a lot of the filly and, if the ground comes up as expected, the Gosden horse will need to be at her best.

But should Charlie Appleby’s Speckled take her chance that one represents another serious threat.

However, Cumani is also planning to send another soft ground loving filly, Norway Cross, to the meeting.

And he’s hoping that Endlesss Credit and Elhaame can take their chances, although he says that finding suitable jockeys is a constant headache citing “the concentration of high-quality Saturday racing” as the problem.

Meanwhile, Australia is 1.72 to win next month’s Derby. Norse Prize is available at 67.00 and True Story at 15.00.
