Cricket – Root targets World Cup glory

Joe Root has urged England to continue their improvements in the one-day arena to ensure they are genuine contenders for glory at the 2019 World Cup. The hosts missed out on a chance for glory at the ICC Champions Trophy when they lost out in the semi-finals to Pakistan, but they get another opportunity on home soil in two years' time when the World Cup takes place. And Root is keen to play his part in helping the Three Lions complete a journey which began straight after a dismal showing at the 2015 World Cup. He told reporters: "(Captain) Eoin Morgan and the rest of the guys know that we're not the finished article, but we have made huge strides. "We've got to keep the same drive that we've had over the last 18 months to keep getting better so that, when that World Cup does come round, we're in the best shape possible and give ourselves the best chance of really contending that final." England, who have yet to win the World Cup, are 9/2 with bet365 to win the 2019 World Cup.
