Cricket – Root eager to guard against complacency

England skipper Joe Root, who is 9/1 with bet365 to be the Top Team Batsman in the series with Sri Lanka, says his players can not afford to rest on their laurels after victory in the opening Test. The tourists wrapped up a 211-run win inside four days in Galle to take a 1-0 lead in the series, the Sri Lankans having got nowhere near their target of 462 in the second innings. England eventually dismissed Sri Lanka for 250, Mooen Ali taking 4-71 while fellow spinner Jack Leach finished with 3-60. Root was delighted to make a winning start to the series but says his team must prepare for a different challenge in Kandy for the second Test, which begins on Wednesday. "We have to make sure we take everything we can from this game and transfer it into the rest of the tour. We can't rest on our laurels," he told Sky Sports. "It (the second Test) will be interesting for sure, but I'd rather be in this position than not knowing who to pick. If the pitch is different we can adapt to that with a different XI."
