Cricket – Root calls for improved display

England captain Joe Root has demanded that the tourists upset the formbook and beat Australia in the third Test in Perth. England have not won at the venue since 1978 and are 2-0 down in the series having lost at Brisbane and Adelaide. The highest total they have made in the first two Tests is 302 and Root knows that the team's batting has to improve if they are to have any chance of retaining the Ashes. The 26-year-old Yorkshireman said: "In the face of adversity, people want to see you put in big performances and prove why you have been chosen to play for England. "If we get that right there is no reason why it can't be 2-1 this time next week." England are 13/8 with bet365 to have a first-innings lead in the third Test while Root is 13/10 to score a fifty in the first innings.
